The coronavirus spreads through the air. How do you know if you are breathing other people's breath? The main indicator is the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air. CO2 is the gas that we exhale when we breathe.
It is well known that checking the CO2 level is useful to see whether a room is well ventilated or not. In a well-ventilated room there is usually less coronavirus in the air and all we want is less virus in the air! Unfortunately, most CO2 sensors on the market cost between 150 and 250 euros (economics - law of supply and demand). A school with 12 classrooms would have to invest up to 3000 euros, which is not always possible. Let's change that with a qualitative and affordable CO2 self-build kit from 46 euros excluding VAT.
Because we are fans of "Don't complain, suggest what's better"We decided to continue the open source Solder-It-Yourself project started (and since discontinued) by RevSpace, so that everyone can afford an affordable quality sensor. You can even use the Control CO2 EDU kit as a STE(A)M hands-on activity at your school, so everyone learns to solder! An additional activity is to 3D design and 3D print a cool enclosure. The files of our enclosure are freely available, but if you want you can also order a 3D printed enclosure with us.

Continuous measurement is vital
CO2 sensors are often "shared" in schools. A CO2 profile of each classroom is measured for one day or one week and this is then taken as the reference for the rest of the school year. That is wrong!
The CO2 level depends on many factors. Occupancy, activity, temperature, relative humidity, ... A measurement for one week is therefore no reference for the other weeks. It is a bit like measuring the temperature in your living room for one day and then adjusting the heating to this profile. We all know that will not work.
To create a safer environment in classrooms, the CO2 must be measured continuously.
Proper measuring is important
Don't be fooled. Many CO2 sensors available on the market are not sufficient to measure correctly.
The only correct way to measure is with a so-called NDIR CO2 sensor. This is also what the Flemish Care and Health Agency indicates as well as the Taskforce Ventilation of the Governmental Commission Corona.
In addition, the measurement error is also very important. This is the extent to which the displayed CO2 value can deviate from reality. As indicated by the Flemish Care and Health Agency it may not exceed 10 % at 900 and 1500 ppm (and 5000 ppm for devices capable of measuring up to 10000 ppm). Taskforce Ventilation of the Governmental Commission Corona then gives 10% up to 2000 ppm
We use qualitative NDIR sensors which are the only correct way to measure CO2.

The kit contains all the necessary parts, including a circuit board, CO2 sensor, display board and connectors. All you need is a soldering iron, some solder, a bit of time and an appetite.
The construction is so simple that students can easily make it themselves. Don't have the necessary materials at home to do this? No problem, we can already assemble your kit for you (assembly add-on), so you don't have to do any soldering yourself.
The CO2 sensors must be powered via a USB-C cable. Do you have a USB-C charger at home? Perfect, then you can start immediately. If not, you can also order one from our shop.
